RECAP: Marcus Rashford enters the 2023-24 season fresh off his best season in the legendary red shirt

Marcus Rashford enters the 2023-24 season fresh off his best season in the legendary red shirt.

In addition to scoring 30 goals in all competitions in a remarkable season, he also secured his first piece of trophy since 2017 by scoring the second goal in the EFL Cup final to help his club defeat Newcastle 2-0 back in February.

He has signed a new, lucrative contract worth £300,000 per week, cementing his career to his childhood club until 2028.

In eight seasons with the Red Devils, the England star has won the hearts of fans with his blend of dedication, humility, and kindness, receiving as many accolades for his off-the-field actions as for his on-the-field ones.

Debut vs Midtjylland, 25th February 2016

Rashford’s debut put him right in the hot seat in front of the Old Trafford faithful, and it couldn’t have gone any better.

United trailed Midtjylland of Denmark on aggregate in an unusually difficult Europa League last 32 match, drawing 1-1 in the second leg after a 2-1 setback in the first, when he was trusted to play.

We had no idea the child would end up being the prince of debuts. The 18-year-old scored two first-time goals to propel United to a 5-1 victory, rescuing an injury-plagued team that was missing 13 players.

A rough diamond from Manchester’s outskirts was thrust into the national spotlight after becoming the club’s youngest European scorer.

Premier League debut vs Arsenal, 28th February 2016

If he was on cloud nine against Midtjylland, he was on cloud ten three days later for his Premier League debut. And this time he was getting started.

Rashford silenced everyone who questioned his credentials by scoring the first two goals and assisting on the third in a 3-2 win over Arsenal. Yes, he could do it at the highest level. The hype was genuine.

His contributions that day disrupted Arsenal’s title challenge, leaving them five points behind league leaders Leicester with the same number of games played.

Manchester derby-winning goal, 20th March 2016

This is the youngest, and that is the youngest. What we’ve learned about Rashford is that he has a knack for shattering records, and Manchester City was one of his early victims.

He used whirling feet and fast pace to leave Martin Demichelis on his haunches before slipping the ball past Joe Hart after receiving a feed just beyond the box.

That goal made him the youngest-ever scorer in a Manchester derby, and it gave the visitors a 1-0 win in their adversaries’ backyard for the first time since 2012, shattering the script and increasing their top-four aspirations – albeit those dreams eventually fell short.

By this point, there was a growing desire to see Rashford in an England shirt, reflecting his meteoric ascension to the top of the game.

Though his scoring rate ultimately reduced, he concluded that season with eight goals in 18 games, a stunning performance for a striker in his prime.

Winning the Europa League, 24th May 2017

This trophy, though not his first, marked the end of a unique journey for Rashford.

United advanced to the quarter-finals thanks to his 107th-minute goal against Anderlecht. At the next level, his spectacular first-leg free-kick against Celta Vigo would be crucial as they won 2-1 on aggregate.

While the league is frequently mocked, United’s 2-0 success over Ajax in the Europa League represented a first European trophy in nine years and something of a vindication of Jose Mourinho’s rocky tenure as manager.

Rashford was chosen to lead the line in Stockholm and played the majority of the final.

Brace against Liverpool, 10th March 2018

Most of Rashford’s career high points have not occurred against adversity, but this one did. In an expensively assembled cast of stars, he was competing for scraps of playing time.

Alexis Sanchez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Romelu Lukaku had all entered M16 that season, and the young striker had played less than 100 Premier League minutes.

Restored to the starting lineup, he capitalized with two goals against Liverpool in a 2-1 victory to keep England in contention for the 2018 World Cup.

Penalty winner against PSG, 6th March 2019

This seemed cruel in every way. It was 94th minute late. The penalty was delivered in a harsh VAR handball call against Presnel Kimpembe. Rashford faced the legendary Gianluigi Buffon, whose time to capture a Champions League medal was almost out.

Rashford knew PSG had a history of crumbling in the Champions League last 16, and boy did he make sure their hearts would break again when he stepped up to take this high-stakes penalty.

He hammered the ball into the roof of the net and celebrated in front of a stunned Parc des Princes, sending his team into the Champions League quarter-finals.

They were the first side in Champions League history to come back from a 2-0 or bigger first-leg deficit at home; 106 had tried and failed before them. What was it that we said about Rashford shattering records?

Knuckleball free-kick vs Chelsea, 30th October 2019

In the grand scheme of the universe, a fourth-round EFL Cup victory doesn’t hold much significance. And yet somehow this goal did.

This was the pinnacle of free-kick scoring, the art form distilled to its purest element, player and ball acting in perfect unison to stun a stadium. Everything about the way he struck the ball, its drooping flight through the air, and the way it crashed into the netting beyond a flailing and hapless Willy Caballero somehow felt right.

It almost reduced Michy Batshuayi, whose leveller minutes earlier had cancelled out Rashford’s first, to tears. Stamford Bridge was in disbelief. Over the course of 35 yards, United’s No 10 had spellbound everyone in attendance.

Hat-trick against RB Leipzig on October 20th, 2020

Rashford’s heroics on this night garnered little of the attention they deserved, slicing past Leipzig’s defense in front of an empty stadium.

The newcomer Germans couldn’t keep up with his pace, movement, cunning feet, or finishing, to the point where you questioned if their defense was just a figment of their imagination, something mentioned but not seen, something on the teamsheet to fulfill the game’s conventions. Rashford shell-shocked them on one of his amazing evenings.

In the process, he set the record for the quickest hat-trick in Champions League history in terms of playing time. Another record was broken when he hit the net three times in 27 seconds.

After his 27-minute hat-trick against RB Leipzig in October 2020, he had the matchball all to himself.

Goal against Manchester City on January 14, 2023

Manchester City are a fertile opponent for Rashford, who has five goals against them in the past five years, a number only surpassed by his efforts against Leicester, Chelsea, and Liverpool. Make no mistake about it: Rashford is a big-game performer.

In January, United mounted a dramatic comeback in the final 15 minutes of the game to hand City only their third Premier League defeat of the season, and Rashford was the one to seal it.

Manuel Akanji slept off for a split second before dancing onto the end of Alejandro Garnacho’s cross and nutmegging Ederson. Pandemonium ensued as United snatched a 2-1 victory and pulled within a point of their rivals.

In January of last season, the 25-year-old once again made the difference against United’s archrivals.

Goal in the Carabao Cup vs Newcastle on February 26th, 2023

Winning the Carabao Cup meant so much to the young Erik ten Hag administration at Old Trafford. It was a declaration of his worthiness for the position, the legitimacy of his football ideals, and his command over his players.

Rashford scored the second goal in their 2-0 final victory over their raucous opponents, putting an end to a Tyneside uprising and earning Ten Hag his first piece of silverware in a fantastic debut season.

In the context of Manchester City’s world dominance, a first trophy in six years was nothing to scoff at, and Rashford helped put Ten Hag’s tenure at United on the map as they attempt to build for further triumphs under him.
