Rasmus Hojlund insider makes admission after £72m Man Utd transfer confirmed

Rasmus Hojlund has made a huge step up by joining Manchester United but the sporting director from one his former sides has allayed fears that he could struggle to cope with the pressure.

Hojlund was officially presented as a United player before Saturday’s pre-season friendly against RC Lens on Saturday. The 20-year-old has been in the UK since Tuesday, finalising terms on a five-year deal that has the option of a further 12 months and undergoing his medical.

United have paid an initial £64million to Atalanta, with £8m set aside for performance and success-related add-ons. It is undoubtedly a huge amount of money for a striker who only hit double figures for the first time last season, and also a heavy weight to place on such young shoulders.

But it is not the first big move for Hojlund, who joined Sturm Graz for €1.8m in January of last year. A modest fee by comparison, but it was the Austrian side’s biggest investment for nearly 20 years and there was plenty of hype for the then-teenager.

“He’s not a quiet guy,” Sturm Graz sporting director Andreas Schicker told the Athletic . “He already arrived with a very good self-esteem but in a positive way.

“He was not arrogant but he had really high self-confidence. To become that special kind of player, you somehow have to be a little bit special also in terms of personality.”

His move to Atalanta for around £15m again brought pressure, as did his call up to the national team. But a hat-trick in his first start for Denmark and six goals in as many caps suggest that did little to weigh him down.

A £72m move to one of the world’s most historic sides is another step up again, but Hojlund doesn’t look to be troubled by expectation and, if Schicker is to be believed, he should hit the ground running.
