Martinez, Hojlund, De Bruyne – Man Utd and Premier League rivals injury latest

Manchester United are not the only Premier League side hampered by high-profile injuries right now.

During their 1-0 win against Wolves at Old Trafford on Monday night, Unted were dealt a fitness blow when Lisandro Martinez had to be withdrawn at half-time with an ankle problem. He joins Amad Diallo, Tyrell Malacia and Rasmus Hojlund – among others – on the treatment table at Carrington.

As for treble-winning neighbours Manchester City, they have been rocked by the news that Belgium captain kevin De Bruyne will be on the side lines for four months . De Bruyne was forced off just 22 minutes into their 3-0 win over Burnley on Friday night and is set to undergo surgery to correct the issue.

Fellow top-four contenders Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are not without their own selection concerns, either, with Jurrien Timber (Arsenal) and Christopher Nkunku (Chelsea) nursing injuries. Here’s our latest round-up from the Premier League

Manchester City

Injuries: Kevin De Bruyne (hamstring).

An overview: While the reigning champions are, currently, looking rather healthy on the injury front, the setback suffered by De Bruyne is an obvious concern. Pep Guardiola does have other star names to call upon and he might make further moves in the transfer market, but nobody can quite replace what the Belgian playmaker gives to City. It looks increasingly like De Bruyne will not return before Christmas.

Manchester United

Injuries: Amad Diallo (knee), Tom Heaton (calf), Rasmus Hojlund (back), Kobbie Mainoo (ankle), Tyrell Malacia (unspecified), Lisandro Martinez (ankle).

An overview: Victory over Wolves came at a price for United as they lost Martinez to injury. His central defensive partner, Raphael Varane, confirmed that news during his post-match interview. He did, though, suggest that it was nothing too much for United to worry about. Hojlund (back) has yet to feature for his new club following a transfer from Atalanta, but the Denmark prospect is training, individually, at Carrington.

Arsenal

Injuries: Mohamed Elneny (knee), Gabriel Jesus (knee), Jurrien Timber (knee).

An overview: There must be something in the water at Arsenal this season. Elneny, Jesus and new summer arrival Timber have all succumbed to knee injuries. Jesus faces a little spell on the sidelines but, as yet, there has been no firm update with regards to former Ajax player, Timber but there are concerns he could be set for a lengthy spell out. Concern also lingers around Oleksandr Zinchenko and a long-standing knock.

Chelsea

Injuries: Benoit Badiashile (hamstring), Marcus Bettinelli (unspecified), Armando Broja (knee), Trevor Chalobah (knock), Wesley Fofana (knee), Christopher Nkunku (knee).

An overview: Chelsea have yet to unleash Nkunku in a competitive match following his move from RB Leipzig as they continue to make do without the €60million recruit in attacking quarters. He will not be fit until November at the earliest. Fofana, meanwhile, has not had too much luck with injuries after touching down at Stamford Bridge 12 months ago, suffering his second major setback during pre-season.

The transfer window is in full swing and United have got their hands on three players well in advance of the September 1 deadline, with Rasmus Hojlund joining Mason Mount and Andre Onana at Old Trafford.

A goalkeeper, a midfielder and a striker were Erik ten Hag’s priorities heading into the summer window, but that doesn’t mean their business ends here, with a move for Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat also on the cards, as well as plenty of possible departures, including Harry Maguire to West Ham.

Liverpool

Injuries: n/a

An overview: No news is good news for Liverpool in this regard. When it comes to further new signings to boost their squad, though, that is an entirely different matter. After bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer, they have been knocked back by other targets including Chelsea-bound Moises Caicedo.

Newcastle United

Injuries: Emil Krafth (knee), Javier Manquillo (groin), Joe Willock (hamstring).

An overview: Newcastle have relatively little to worry about on and off the pitch. Willock would, perhaps, be the one absentee pushing for a starting place. However, marquee signing Sandro Tonali had a debut to remember and, so, Newcastle are not particular light on options in their engine room.

Tottenham Hotspur

Injuries: Rodrigo Bentancur (knee), Fraser Forster (back), Bryan Gil (groin), Cristian Romero (head), Ryan Sessegnon (hamstring), Alfie Whiteman (ankle).

An overview: Harry Kane left behind a jam-packed physio room when leaving Tottenham for Bayern Munich in the summer. It will be hard enough for Ange Postecoglou to replace the England captain, in any case, but the Australian could certainly do with getting some players back on the mend in other positions, too.
