John Murtough explains why Man United signed Rasmus Hojlund

Manchester United football director John Murtough described striker Rasmus Hojlund as ‘a truly exceptional talent’ following confirmation of his move to Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old arrived in the UK earlier this week and first visited United Carrington training base on Tuesday afternoon to begin the process of completing his medical and put the finishing touches to the move after flying in from Italy. United reached a breakthrough in negotiations with Atalanta last Saturday, agreeing an overall package worth £72million.

The Reds, who had made signing a striker their leading priority this summer, will pay £64m up front and an additional £8m in add-ons. Hojilund has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, featuring the option of an additional year.

The Denmark international is the club’s third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Mason Mount and Andre Onana last month. Boss Erik ten Hag recently identified the youngster as his primary striker target after holding several video calls with him.

Murtough said: “Rasmus is a truly exceptional talent; he possesses technical and physical attributes which rank him amongst the best players in the world for his age group. Working under Erik ten Hag and his coaches will provide Rasmus with the perfect development platform; everyone across the club will ensure that he is given the time and all the support required to reach his immense potential.

“Throughout the summer we have acted quickly and decisively to secure our primary targets early in the transfer window. This will ensure that Erik and his coaches have the best opportunity to prepare the squad to push for further success in the exciting campaign ahead.”

Hojlund, who is linking up with fellow Dane Christian Eriksen at Old Trafford, spent just one season at Atalanta, scoring ten goals and registering four assists in 34 appearances. He joined the Italian outfit from Sturm Graz last August.
